The following silks are available in approximately 95 colors and all
are washable but you must wash prior to garment construction. In the
descriptions I mention other widths of these silks; you can find them
listed under "Custom-Dyed Silks"
and "Italian and French
Bridal Silks".
| 19mm silk charmeuse, 45" wide |
Silk charmeuse has a slippery, fluid drape and a high sheen. We have
several weights of silk charmeuse. Depending on the weight of the silk
will determine how you will use it. 19mm silk charmeuse works well for
lingerie, casual blouses and lightweight summer dresses (be sure to line
these); 23mm silk charmeuse works better for high stress clothing such
as pants, and pjs. Weights 30mm and up are generally reserved for formal
or bridal wear although a heavy silk charmeuse would make a beautiful
robe with a lighterweight charmeuse used for the nightgown. This silk is
made from cultivated silk yarns and is of fine quality. This is a
luxuriously-looking silk fabric. |

16mm silk crepe, 45"
wide |
|
This silk crepe, also known as crepe de chine
has a beautiful luster, works well for blouses, lingerie and
nightgowns. Silk crepe is made up of tightly twisted silk yarns
and is very sturdy, even at lighter weights. There are several
weights of crepe, all very popular depending on the garment
requirements. |

|
40mm 4 ply silk crepe, 45" wide |
This is considered the "cadillac" of silks. It is "heavy" for silk, has
a beautiful luster to it even in pastel colors and drapes beautifully.
It hangs like glass when you are standing still and it resists wrinkling
in a very real way. This silk is generally used for very fine business
suits, formal evening wear, bridal gowns and siimply constructed dresses
that you can wear during the day and by adding embellishments carry into
an evening situation. The quality of this silk varies from supplier to
supplier. Because it is a crepe it has a stretch to it and if you don't
get a good quality, you will have a lot of stretching that is difficult
to control while sewing. It makes up into beautiful bias cut gowns in
the wider width. |

|
8mm silk chiffon, 45" wide |
|
A lightweight silk, semi-transparent, light and floating with a flat
finish. Used primarily for evening/pageant gowns. It is a washable silk
but it is a bit difficult to work with. Generally this is not a silk for
new sewers -- you may go "bald" working with it . . . |
 |
| |
| 12mm silk georgette, 45" wide |
This is one of my favorite silks. It is semi-opaque, easy to work with
and have a wonderful drape. This particular silk crepe has a minimal
luster which means it works well for daytime wear. It is not an obvious
silk but of course has the wonderful hand of silk fabric. This fabric is
excellent for blouses, nightgowns/robes, little girl dresses, bridal
gowns -- where you want a more casual look to your dress and flowing day
dresses that need to have a casual look. This silk also can be used for
casual tops/pants. |

|
6mm silk organza, 45" wide |
|
Silk organza is a versatile silk but you tend to see it used for flower
girl dresses, summerweight bridal gowns, underlining and the like. But
this silk makes up into custom blouses and unconstructed long coats for
special occasions. It also makes beautiful custom silk flowers and it
embroiders and beads beautifully. Silk organza looks like it can only be
drycleaned but that isn't true. You can wash silk organza which makes it
much easier to maintain. This silk has a flat finish, is transparent and
has a crisp hand. |
 |
| |
|
38mm silk "linen", 45" wide |

This silk is not "linen" but it looks like linen. It has a flat
finish with subtle "slubs" and a wonderful drape and hand. Used
for dresses and suits because it is heavy enough to maintain
it's shape. Nice quality silk not very often used because of
limited availability. |
| |
|
8mm silk habotai, 45" wide |
|
Also known as China silk this silk is best used for lining garments/ It
is a cultivated silk of fine quality but it is not strong enough to use
for high-stress areas such as back of shoulders, seat of pants etc.
Those clothings that require constant pull and give will not last if
they are made of this silk. It is a beautifully lustrous silk and also
makes up nicely for pillows, scarfs, and the like. Semi-crisp hand and
is also available in heavier weights. In the heavier weights, there is
more flexibility for useage. |

|
38mm crepe back silk satin, 45" wide |

Lovely, lovely silk with a high sheen on one side and a semi-rough crepe
finish on the other. Because of its weight, it has an undulating drape;
this is a very flashy piece of silk and is generally used for formal
evening wear and bridal. It lends itself to those who want to recreate a
vintage wedding gown style. |
| |
|
12mm silk satin organza, 45" wide |
|
A crisp, minimal satin finish silk that is generally used for flower
girl dresses, A-line and bias cut layered bridal gowns. It can also be
used for unconstructed blouses and coats that don't require linings.
Again, like regular silk organza, this silk is washable. |
